Our Condition

Srila Guru Maharaj always says that we should sing this song because we do not realise what our condition is. Actually, what is written in this song is a fact, this is our real life.

āmāra jīvana, sadā pāpe rata,
      nāhika puṇyera leśa…

Actually, our life is always full of sin, there is nothing good in our life.

…parere udvega, diyāchi ye kata,
        diyāchi jīvere kleśa [1]

We always give some disturbance, give some trouble to everybody, to all jiva souls—for example, we cut fish, cut meat, we give trouble to so many insects, and so on.

nija sukha lāgi’, pāpe nāhi ḍari,
     dayā-hīna svārtha-para…

For our own happiness, for our own selves we can do anything wrong, we can commit any sin, and we do not feel afraid, we have no fear. Dayā-hīna: there is always no kindness in us, we are cruel. Svartha-para means we are selfish.

…para-sukhe duḥkhī, sadā mithya-bhāṣī,
         para-duḥkha sukha-kara [2]

If we see somebody is happy, we always feel sorrow. For example, somebody got a good job, and we feel sad, “Oh, I did not get that job!”; or somebody becomes rich, somebody makes a big house, and we are sad, “Oh, I could not do that!” These are our feelings: every time we see others’ happiness, we feel sorrow. Sadā mithya-bhāṣī: we always tell lies, and para-duḥkha means when somebody gets some problem, when somebody is sad, we feel happy.

aśeṣa kāmanā, hṛdi mājhe mora…

There are so many desires in our heart. Even when we get old, we have no teeth, our hair is all grey and falling out, but still we think, “Oh, I will make a big house, I will see my son get married, and my grandson (or granddaughter) will live there, I will see them,” and so on. We think we will see everything, that we will be very big and rich, but we do not realise we can die in five minutes. There are always so many desires in our mind.

Once, I went to preach in one place in Burdwan district, it is near our Nabadwip temple. I went there every year, and that time, there was one man who had built a new three-story house for himself. I went there, and he showed me the house, said what a nice bathroom it had, what a big house it was. He was very proud of it. The next day he wanted to officially move to his new house to stay there, and he told me, “Maharaj, we will make a big some ceremony, with sankirtan and everything!” That was his plan, but in the morning, he went to cut a small plant near his house, and there was a snake there—the snake bit him and he immediately died. I saw it with my own eyes. He thought, “Oh, I will live in this house, I will live there happily, my guests will come,” and so on, but he could not see it with his own eyes.

…krodhī, dambha-parāyana…

We are always angry, we are always proud and have ego.

…mada-matta sadā, viṣaye mohita,
        hiṁsā-garva vibhūṣana [3]

Mada-matta: we are like drunkards. We have seen in Nabadwip, for example, some people drink whiskey or wine and lie the whole night in the drain, but they think, “I am the prime-minister of India! I am sleeping on a good bed, in a luxury house!” We are just like that. We think we are a sannyasi, we have a big position, we are the manager of the temple, we are the secretary of the temple, we have some big position! But actually, if I die one second later, I will be taken to the Ganga and burnt or buried in the mud... This is what our condition is like.

nidrālasya hata, sukārye virata,
        akārye udyogī āmi…

We always sleep, we are lazy, and always keep far from doing something good. For example, you can see that we have come here, we are giving some lecture, speaking some Hari-katha, and somebody is playing football at this time. Do you see the condition we are in? Just as somebody is playing football while we are giving a lecture, we are always far from doing something good; instead, we are always eager to do something bad.

…pratiṣṭha lāgiyā, śāṭhya-ācharaṇa,
           lobha-hata sadā kāmī [4]

We are always asking for name and fame. We think, “Oh, in future I will be a big guru!”, “I will be a big singer!”, “Everybody will give me a garland!”, “Everybody will wash my feet!” Pratiṣṭha lāgiyā: just for the sake of our own name and fame we do so many wrong things, we behave so bad.

কনক-কামিনী প্রতিষ্ঠা-বাঘিনী
ছাড়িয়াছে যারে সেই ত বৈষ্ণব

kanaka-kāminī, pratiṣṭhā-bāghinī,
chāḍiyāche jāre, sei ta’ vaiṣṇava…

“Those who have given up money, women, and fame, are the true Vaishnavs” (‘Vaishnav Ke?’: 11).

Who is a Vaishnav? We can leave ladies, we can leave money, it is not a problem, but we are always searching for establishment. Srila Bhakti Vinod Thakur says pratistha means sukarer vistha—establishment is like the stool of a pig.

e hena durjana, sajjana-varjita,
        aparādhi nirantara…

This is our condition. We are not a good person, that is why we never get good association—we always lose good association, we are always sinners.

…śubha-kārya-śūnya, sadānartha-manāḥ,
             nānā duḥkhe jara jara [5]

We always look for the things that are not eternal, for the material things, that is why we always suffer from the three kinds of misery—adhibhautik, adhidaivik, adhyatmik (আধিভৌতিক, আধিদৈবিক, আধ্যাত্মিক): miseries caused by one’s body, by the nature, and other souls.

vārdhakye ekhana, upāya-vihīna…

Now that I have become very old, I am starting to search, “Where is Krishna?” Now, when I have no hearing, I cannot hear the Hari-katha; I have no teeth, and when I sing and say, “Hare,” it comes out like “Bhare.” Now I have so many diseases in my body—I cannot take so much prasadam, and if I take prasadam, my stomach becomes upset. When I was young, I always went here and there and everywhere, and now I have become old and like this, and now I am thinking, “Where is Krishna?”... That is why Srila Bhakti Vinod Thakur says: search for Sri Krishna now.

In India, some people take bath in the pond, and sometimes we stand there and think, “Oh, it is very cold! I cannot jump there!” But Guru Maharaj said: do not wait, throw your towel into the pond, and when you see the towel going away or sinking, you will jump into the water to take your towel!

So, you must do it now—just like Prahlad Maharaj who practised from his kaumar age (from his very youth)...
