Rough transcript of this lecture:

Śrīman Mahāprabhu not make so many ślokas, only eight ślokas; it is very famous as a Śikṣāṣṭakam. That’s also we have got in Caitanya-caritāmṛta. Famous śloka, ceto-darpaṇa-mārjana, āśliṣya vā pāda-ratāṁ pinaṣṭu mām: last śloka and first śloka. In the middle so many, but eight ślokas. And another few ślokas in the name of Mahāprabhu, like:

dadhi-mathana-ninādais tyakta-nidraḥ prabhāte
nibhṛta-padam agāraṁ ballavīnāṁ praviṣṭaḥ
mukha-kamala-samīrair āśu nirvāpya dīpān
kavalita-navanītaḥ pātu māṁ bāla-kṛṣṇaḥ

(Padyāvalī: 143)

“That child Kṛṣṇa, who, awakening by the sound of butter-churning, stealthily enters the homes of the cowherd ladies, swiftly blows out the lamps with the breeze of His lotus mouth and devours the fresh butter—may He kindly protect me.” (Prapanna-jīvanāmṛtam: 6.12).

And when Mahāprabhu defeated Digvijayi, that time one śloka Mahāprabhu recited, that is His own composition or it was previous and He presented—there is little hesitation, but that’s also new śloka. And another two-three ślokas in the name of Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Not so many ślokas Mahāprabhu composed, and it is miracle, why not composed?

Mahāprabhu when defeated Digvijayi, that time He was only an expert in Sanskrit grammar, that’s also kalap, grammar name—kalap-vyakarana. Not panini so big, saraswata not, no other. So many vyakaran Sanskrit, but Mahāprabhu was expert in kalap-vyakaran… externally, but internally He knows everything.

And when Digvijayi asked, “You are only maybe master of kalap-vyakaran, but which way *You* know all this ornamental thought and property in Sanskrit?”

Mahāprabhu said, “By the grace of Saraswati maybe I have got it. Someone may get memory by the grace of Saraswati, someone maybe got knowledge.”

This way given answer Mahāprabhu. And not only that, that discussion… actually He made dissection of whole śloka: there is five good quality and five bad quality, and told, “If I shall more realise, then more will come out.” That was Mahāprabhu’s comment in front of Digvijayi Pandit.

But that Mahāprabhu easily can compose so many things, but not… Not only that, Mahāprabhu is dependable something about the scripture, old scripture and He shown that. When He have got Kṛṣṇa-karnamrita and Brahma-samhita, in South India, very loving way he brought that and given to Rāmānanda Rāy and Swarūp Dāmodar and told, “What discussion happened with you and Me, that is inside of this book.”

Mahāprabhu’s nature [is] like that, always giving honour to the scriptures, not only that, that time it was tradition—sannyāsis three times will bathe, prasādaṁ will take very little, etc. etc. And Mahāprabhu following that, and sannyāsi not will take the thick bed for sleeping, and Mahāprabhu following that. All under supervision of Śaṅkar-sampradāya, but Mahāprabhu not dishonoured, He followed, and it is surprise.

…Chastity and sincerity ache… Qualification, what is the qualification of person? Chastity and sincerity. And love and affection, etc. etc. But first—sincerity and chastity must be there. That is the main thing. If it is within someone, he is a jewel, no doubt. I have got so many Westerners, qualified devotee, but so many in Indian not I have got... some of the Indian, they know, good, qualified. But sincere must be with Kṛṣṇa consciousness, with Guru, with religion, what given Caitanya Mahāprabhu, with that religion. That is necessary.

Some knowledge about Kṛṣṇa consciousness, it is after reading the books, many can collect, but on heart the sincere and chaste—very rare to get it.

You see, we all know the teachings of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, what I told just now, eight ślokas, but third śloka [is] for everyone very important. First śloka, ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanaṁ, it’s for knowledge and attraction and attachment; and second śloka: the divine relationship with Lord, with divine manifestation, so many divine manifestations of Lord, relationship with that. But completely third śloka [is] for the practitioner.

We are all the practitioner, we are attracted, we are attached, we have love, we have affection with Kṛṣṇa consciousness, we have some chastity, some sincerity. Everything we have, little-little, but our practicing life not proper direction going. Many is good with their practicing life, but ego coming to us and disturbing, and ego making sometimes massacre everything. What for we are in the Maṭh? What for we are within this practicing life? We must consider it, “Why we have come to the Maṭh, why we are practicing this, and why not it is properly can do?” We must realise it. And Mahāprabhu told, “You follow this directive, you will be successful, *Sure,* successful.” And it is, we are seeing that, but difficulty, no doubt, to follow. But no other way, without following that. Then we must follow directives of Mahāprabhu, that is:

tṛṇād api sunīcena
taror iva sahiṣṇunā
amāninā mānadena…

Taror iva sahiṣṇuna is must, essential. We are defeated by ego and for that we cannot do that, but necessary. Sahiṣṇu, we must be tolerant. Otherwise result not will be good for me.

I have seen so many things in my life, and finally I understand. “Wait and see.” Guru Maharaj told, “Not to take decision immediately, wait and see.” You will get good result through your activity, through your practice. All will come through ego, but necessary to demolish ego, and not so easy. I have seen so many good devotees, but ego giving disturbance to them. That is necessary to avoid, ego.

What will be few days this life… And for myself, I can say, every night I am thinking, “Tomorrow I shall see sunrise or not?” This is situation, but everyone has that. Actually, Tamal Kṛṣṇa Mahārāj—young man, very learned, rich, enriched with Kṛṣṇa consciousness, everything, then motorcar accident, life gone. Car accident. Then lives have no security. In this material world so many security governments showing, that all is useless. Three days ago, one coach, cricket coach—dead. Very beautiful health, strong, everything—but dead. Rajiv Gandhi was so rich and with so much protection by the government, Indira Gandhi, and Mahatma Gandhi, all was very secure position, but where gone that? Then we have no assurance of our lifetime—any moment life can go, tūrṇam yateta na pated anumṛtyu yāvat,

labdhvā su-durlabham idaṁ bahu-sambhāvante
mānuṣyam artha-dam anityam apīha dhīraḥ…

Śrīmad-Bhāgavat said,

…tūrṇam yateta na pated anumṛtyu yāvat
niḥśreyasāya viṣayaḥ khalu sarvataḥ syāt

“After many, many births and deaths one achieves the rare human form of life, which, although temporary, affords one the opportunity to attain the highest perfection. Thus, a sober human being should quickly endeavor for the ultimate perfection of life as long as his body, which is always subject to death, has not fallen down and died. After all, sense gratification is available even in the most abominable species of life, whereas Kṛṣṇa consciousness is possible only for a human being.” (Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam: 11.9.29).

āhāra-nidrā-bhaya-maithunaṁ ca
sāmānyam etat paśubhir narāṇām…

Eating, sleeping, enjoying, and fearing, everything in the life for everyone, and it is very natural coming to us, but Kṛṣṇa consciousness not coming to everyone that way. Necessary to understand and *be* conscious about that. When you have got the human life, that is the sufficient for you, you wisely use that life, and you will be super benefited; because all life is dependable, but human life is free, here is some freedom for the jīva-soul. One tree cannot walk, cannot go, but under the tree if one sādhu will sit, Kṛṣṇa-bhakta will sit, take some help of the tree, then sukṛti coming to the tree, next life tree will get promotion. Promotion means more consciousness. Consciousness is with everyone, but it is suppressed. Achchhadita-chetana [covered consciousness], mukulita-chetana [budding consciousness], sankuchita-chetana [retracted consciousness], vikachita-chetana [blossoming consciousness], purna-vikachita-chetana [fully blossomed consciousness], etc. etc. Bhakti Vinod Ṭhākur realised so many things in Caitanya Śikṣāmṛtaṁ.

[Devotee: Jaiva-dharma.]

Jaiva-dharma? Ah [Bengali.] Anyhow…

[Siddhanti Mj: Guru Mahārāj gives a nice explanation in our new book, Divine Aspiration.]

We are enriched with so many new books. I am thinking almost three hundred books we published, all over the world our mission publishes it. Three hundred books. Our book list I am not looking that, but sometimes it is, I am thinking, it is necessary to make perfect book list. Sometimes I am thinking, and next time I am forgetting. I want to say Śrīpād Mahānanda Prabhu, he will do that, he have done one, but after that more published. So many books published from our mission. But one book, two books is sufficient to understand Kṛṣṇa consciousness, what given Guru Mahārāj the knowledge to us, we are thinking that is sufficient. Not necessary to read the Ganges full of scriptures.

Mahāprabhu told very simple thing,

prabhu kahe—śuna, śrīpāda, ihāra kāraṇa
guru more mūrkha dekhi’ karila śāsana

mūrkha tumi, tomāra nāhika vedāntādhikāra
‘kṛṣṇa-mantra’ japa sadā,—ei mantra-sāra

(Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā, 7.71-72)

Mahāprabhu summarily dismissed other knowledge, told it is not necessary. But why we are doing? We are doing for our preaching, practicing life. Our life [is] two kind of life: one is practicing life, one is preaching life, that also practicing style. Because we are the follower of Śrīla Bhakti Siddhānta Saraswati Goswami Ṭhākur. Before that here was so many apa-sampradāya, actually. Bhakti Vinod Ṭhākur corrected that and given charge to Bhakti Siddhānta Saraswatī Ṭhākur. And Saraswatī Ṭhākur from his birth, he is enlightened, shown to us he enlightened in Kṛṣṇa consciousness and finally organised to stay in Māyāpur, after getting the service in Māyāpur… and he preached Kṛṣṇa consciousness, and preaching life given to everyone. This is bhajan and this is sādhana.

Mahāprabhu what given, that Prabhupād Saraswatī Ṭhākur told—the kirtan:

tāra madhye sarva-śreṣtha nāma-saṅkīrtana
niraparādhe nāma laile pāya prema-dhana

“Of the nine processes of devotional service, the most important is to always chant the holy name of the Lord. If one does so, avoiding the ten kinds of offences, one very easily obtains the most valuable love of Godhead.” (Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.71).

Śravaṇ-kīrtanaṁ,

mālī hañā kare sei bīja āropaṇa
śravaṇa-kīrtana-jale karaye secana

upajiyā bāḍe latā ‘brahmāṇḍa’ bhedi’ yāya
‘virajā’, ‘brahma-loka’ bhedi’ ‘para-vyoma’ pāya

tabe yāya tad-upari ‘goloka-vṛndāvana’
‘kṛṣṇa-caraṇa’-kalpa-vṛkṣe kare ārohaṇa

“When a person receives the seed of devotional service, he should take care of it by becoming a gardener and sowing the seed in his heart. If he waters the seed gradually by the process of śravaṇa and kīrtana [hearing and chanting], the seed will begin to sprout.

“As one waters the bhakti-latā-bīja, the seed sprouts, and the creeper gradually grows to the point where it penetrates the walls of this universe and goes beyond the Virajā River, lying between the spiritual world and the material world. It attains brahma-loka, the Brahman effulgence, and penetrating through that stratum, it reaches the spiritual sky and the spiritual planet Goloka Vṛndāvana.

“Being situated in one’s heart and being watered by sravana-kirtana, the bhakti creeper grows more and more. In this way it attains the shelter of the desire tree of the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa, who is eternally situated in the planet known as Goloka Vṛndāvana, in the topmost region of the spiritual sky.” (Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā, 19.152–154).

Procedure Kavirāj Goswāmī given… This is fact, we are very happy at least Śrīla Saraswatī Ṭhākur is so merciful to us, Śrīla Guru Mahārāj extremely merciful to us, then we have got some inspiration, we have got some love, we have got some affection, we have got some honour, and we have got some chastity and sincerity… Maybe there is some percentage high or low, but connected with Kṛṣṇa consciousness, it is truth. It will, gradually, it will be developed, and we will be enriched more and more in Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

Actually this mantraṁ we have got, that is service. Serve Mahāprabhu, serve Guru, serve Vaiṣṇav, serve to the conditioned soul who is, like you, suffering from this illusory environment—serve to them also. Jīve doyā nāme ruci vaiṣṇava seva, this is three procedure given Mahāprabhu. Rūpa, Sanātana, they given us this ideal.
