Utilising our fortune

Sri Guru-varga to all the assembled Vaishnavas and to the land of Govardhan and extended land Mathura-mandal, we are giving our obeisances and pray for the mercy of the Vaishnavas, the big assessor acharyas and for assembled gathering, that we can have a proper conception when we come to Govardhan and we come to Vrindavan, when we visit the holy places connected with our parampara and the Lord Himself.

So today is Govardhan-puja and Govardhan-puja in particular we are remembering the affectionate caring personal guardianship of Lord Krishna for the surrendered souls. And here in Govardhan then Srila Gurudev, Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj, he told, “The Govardhan is a very protected place. It is a place where we are getting the affectionate protection of the Lord Himself both as the lifter of Govardhan Hill.”

And as He showed Himself that He is Govardhan Hill itself or Himself giving protection to the devotees. And the three principal centers of our Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math. They are at the Mul-Math, Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math in Navadwip, and here, Govardhan, and in Jagannath Puri. All of these temples they are closely associated with Govardhan Hill. We know in Navadwip that area of Koladwip is known as Gupta Govardhan and in Puri that area is Chatak-parvat where Mahaprabhu, He was reminded of Govardhan Hill and saw the Chatak-parvat was Govardhan Hill and turn ecstatic on seeing that hill. And of course, here we are right beside the parikrama path of Govardhan Hill itself.

So, our three principal temples in the three rooms of the same house means Navadwip, Vrindavan and Puri. They’re each closely associated with the affectionate guardianship of Govardhan Hill and Krishna’s lila here. And by the way the question came up and has come up. Krishna was only seven years old but He lifted the hill on with the little finger of His left hand. And the question came up then He’s holding this hill. Then how is it that these the men of Vrindavan, the gopas, who must be so much taller they are coming with sticks to help hold the hill but He’s only a small boy holding? And I got the answer just a few minutes ago when I saw here the diorama above our Deities. Here little Krishna even though He’s seven years old He’s found a boulder to stay on to hold the hill. So, our answer came down. Anyhow when we are here, we have the fortune at this time of Govardhan-puja within this Kartik, special month of Kartik. We have the fortune of being able to visit many places and very high places of Krishna’s lila.

But as we have seen yesterday, we are going to the highest confidential places such as Radha-kunda and Shyama-kunda. But the focus for us, the focus for the Gaudiya Vaishnavas, the focus of the family of Gurudev and Guru Maharaj will always be those places where we are getting the safety and protection of the conception of Krishna-lila through Nityananda and Mahaprabhu, through the great souls headed by the six Goswamis, headed by Rupa Goswami who was given the charge of the sampradaya by Mahaprabhu Himself. So, you’ll notice that although we are visiting these high places in regard to the lila of Krishna. That the focus for us all has to be the safe protection of the lotus feet of the predecessor Acharyas in our line.

If we can stay within the family of the Gaudiya Vaishnavas, within the family of Guru Maharaj, Gurudev and our sampradaya then you’ll be protected from what Srila Saraswati Thakur, Srila Guru Maharaj, Srila Gurudev also strongly were emphasizing, will be protected from the sahajiya line, the line of imitation, the line of pretending. And the focus of that will be that we are:

tṛṇād api sunīchena taror iva sahiṣṇunā
amāninā māna-dena kīrtanīyaḥ sadā hariḥ

_{[“The Lord’s Name is to be chanted always, with more humility than a blade of grass, tolerance like that of a tree, respect for everyone, and without desire for respect from anyone.”]}

That will be so much in a mood of humility, tolerance, giving honor to others in the mood of ‘dasānudāsānudās’ to the Vaishnavas who are showing us the holy Dham and revealing the pastimes of the Lord.

So today we have the good fortune of being here in Govardhan on the day of Govardhan-puja and in the arati that we were sang this morning composed by Srila Gurudev in honor of Giriraj, of Govardhan Hill. There in one of the verses it’s translated into English as being it is a very rare opportunity to witness the arati of Sri Govardhan, Sri Giridhari-Govardhan. So today we have that rare opportunity and out of millions and millions of people in the world and even in India (India now has a population of 1.2 billion), out of all of these people worldwide and even within India you can see a relatively very small portion are able to be here at Govardhan today.

So, let us all utilize our fortune as Srila Gurudev would say. We have a fortune we must utilize it, lets utilize it in the association of the devotees keeping firmly and only within the conception given by our parampara and that way he stays safe in our worship without offense to Sri Giriraj on this day of Giriraj-Govardhan-puja.
